Nate Wright is destined for awesomeness, that is, if he can get through the day without getting detention again. Nickelodeon and Paramount+ are taking viewers down the halls of P.S. 38 in the much-anticipated, animated series, Big Nate, based off of the beloved and iconic, best-selling children’s books and comic strip written and drawn by Lincoln Pierce. The series, which will begin streaming exclusively on Paramount+ on Thursday, Feb. 17, follows 11-year-old Nate Wright as he gets through sixth grade life with a new adventure always on the horizon.
From crushes to pimples, surviving middle school may not be the easiest thing to do, but luckily, Nate has his awesome pals always by his side. This fun-filled series will bring to life new, original storylines centered on Nate. One of the many incredible parts of this show is that although it focuses on Nate’s new escapades, the series also has a great sense of nostalgia to it – whether it’s paying homage to 80s classics and songs or just reminding us all about our own *awkward* (extra emphasis on the *awkward*) sixth grade memories. Trouble is always right around the corner when Nate Wright is around, but he never fails to tackle it in true Nate fashion – with pure greatness.
We’re all able to step inside Nate’s imaginative mind through his creative cartoons he draws. Big Nate introduces us to an abundance of terrific characters. We have none other than Nate Wright himself, voiced by the brilliant Ben Giroux, who is a pretty big deal and is known for the epic pranks he pulls off. Then we have Teddy Ortiz, Nate’s right-hand man and partner in chaos. Arnie Pantoja lends his voice to Teddy. Bryce Charles brings her charm to the role of Dee Dee Holloway, Nate’s theater-loving friend who always puts on a great show. And, rounding out the fantastic friend group is Nate’s trusted buddy, the intelligent Francis Pope, voiced by Daniel MK Cohen. The Big Nate voice cast also stars Dove Cameron as Ellen Wright, Rob Delaney as Martin Wright, Charlie Schlatter as Chad Applewhite, Kevin Michael Richardson as Principal Nichols, and Carolyn Hennesy as Mrs. Godfrey.
Despite working on this show in some unique circumstances (the cast recorded episodes at home due to the pandemic), they all brought pure magic to this series and made misadventures extra thrilling. Whether it’s trying to pass gym class or balancing the power dynamic between brother and sister, it goes without saying that Nate is always up for one thrill of a ride. Who knew trouble could be so… fun?
