How to Draw a Classic Superhero
We love comics very much and so we created a huge number of drawing lessons about the most different heroes and villains from comics. Basically we drew specific characters, but today we want to show you a more collective image of a hero. So, let’s get down to the lesson about how to draw a classic superhero.
Step 1
First of all, we need to sketch out the skeleton of the hero using very light lines. Sketch an oval head and a line of the spine, on which we sketch out the thorax and the pelvis. With the help of simple lines sketch out the arms and legs. A bit about the proportions. The height of the body is equal to the height of 7-8 heads, of which the length of the torso is 2.5 – 3 heads, the length of the legs is 3.5 – 4 heads, length of the arms is approximately 2.5 heads and the shoulders are the width of 3 heads.
Step 2
Now let’s add the volume to the body of our superhero. First of all, we sketch out two lines on the head that intersect in the center of the face. The vertical line will help to find the center of the face and the horizontal line will help us to draw the eyes. Next, sketch out the outlines of the neck and torso, which widens at the top and narrows in the waist. With the help of simple geometric figures sketch out the arms and legs.
Step 3
Now let’s add some basic details to make our drawing look more like a superhero. Being guided by the intersecting lines, we sketch out the eyes, nose and smiling mouth (superheroes from classic comics in general were very fond of smiling). Next, sketch out the outlines of the hair, the ears and the outlines of the mask. Next, go to the body and outline the details of the costume.
Step 4
Starting with this step, we will use darker lines. You can use stronger pressing on the pencil or use a liner or ink. Thus, draw out the outlines of the details of the face and mask that covers the upper part of the face. With the help of long and smooth lines we draw out the hair. Next, draw out the contours of the square jaw and remove all unnecessary guidelines.
Step 5
Now we move a little lower and begin to draw details of the torso. Draw out the contours of the neck and pectoral muscles, visible from under the costume. Now let’s work with the details of the costume, drawing them with smooth and clear lines. Add the necessary folds and remove all unnecessary guidelines from the torso of our superhero.
Step 6
So let’s move on to the arms of our classic superhero. With the help of clear and dark lines draw out the outlines of the sleeves. Add the necessary folds in the areas of compression or stretching of the tissue. At the very end of the step, carefully draw out the outlines of the fists (to learn more about this visit our lesson on how to draw hands) and remove all unnecessary guidelines from the arms.
Step 7
Now let’s take care of the lower part of the body of our superhero. First of all, draw out a wide belt and shorts (which superheroes like to wear over their pants). Next, draw out the outlines of the legs taking into account all the muscles and joints as shown in our example. Next, draw out the outlines of high boots. Add the necessary folds and delete all the remaining unnecessary guidelines from our superhero drawing.
Step 8
So, we reached the last step in the drawing lesson about how to draw a classic superhero, and here we will draw shadows. Since this is a classic superhero, we will draw classic shadows. In classic comic books, shadows are drawn in the form of black and contrasting shadows. A slightly lighter shade is drawn by dense hatching.
As we said above, today we showed you how to draw a collective image of a superhero. Using the tips from this tutorial you will be able to draw any other superhero. But the most important advice is that you must practice as often as possible, because it is practice that makes you a real artist.
