How to Draw a Realistic Dolphin

Start out by picking your pencils. I used an HB pencil for shading/sketching, a 2H for light lines/shading, and a B for dark lines/shading.

Start out by getting a basic sketch of the dolphin down. You can use the guidelines if you need them. HB pencils are usually best for shading.

Once you have the sketch down go ahead and shade in the background. I used an HB pencil and a paper towel for this step.

Start using the 2H pencil to outline the dolphin, starting at the forehead. Be very gentle if you are using a 2H, you don’t want to tear into the paper!

Start smoothing out your shading by working from the head backwards. You should only need the 2H for this. Use the B only when you need dark values.

Erase the sky and define the horizon in the background. Make sure that the dolphin’s head is above the horizon. This will make it obvious that it is jumping out of the water.

lightly shade in the rest of the dolphin with an HB pencil. Don’t shade to strongly because you’ll still need to erase away some splashing water.

Start making your way down the tail-fin by smoothing out the shading with a 2H. Outline and shade around a few drops of water here and there.
