Step by step guide
Sketching and colouring in Dory is easy when you go one bit at a time. Scroll down to see how it’s done.
-
1. draw the head
Our cartoon drawing of Dory will start with a large Easter Egg shape. It;s not actually an Easter Egg, but a front view of our fishy friend.
Once we add some detail like fins, eyes, and a tail you will recognise this Pixar character for sure.
Now a pair of guidelines so we know where to place these features.
-
2. draw the eyes and mouth
Dory’s wide smile will sit on the centre line on the left side of our oval shape.
And two bulging-frog like eyes above this mouth, again on the left side of our drawing.
They sit under an arching eyebrow like this.
Guys, there’s going to be quite a lot of rubbing out of messy pencil lines here but don’t worry, you can leave them in – messy is fine.
Just some quick tidying up around the face and body.
-
3. draw one of Dory’s fins
Now, this part is a bit more tricky.
Dory has a pattern on her side, and the best way to describe this is like an old man’s sideburn, which reaches down and around.
And the fin poking upwards, well that could be the old man’s ear, couldn’t it?
OK, more erasing… sorry guys, almost there now.
Here is a large fin on the right, flapping around with joy.
-
4. add another fin
Let’s draw another on the other side of Dory’s body – but much smaller. It;s smaller because it is further away and things shrink in the distance – that’s a pro art tip for you!
A few last touch ups and we’re finished.
-
5. draw the body
You may want to redraw some of these pencil lines, so this. If not, no worries!
Some final detail now on Nemo’s friend and that’s a wrap!
Awesome job!
-
6. trace over with black pen
Part two now friends, this is where we focus on the outline of our Dory illustration.
We want to make our artwork look bold and beautiful.
We can do this by tracing around the pencil outlines with a darker pencil, marker pen or felt tip.
This is a technique that transforms any ordinary sketch into a fun cartoon style.
Hey did you know, in the film Finding Nemo Dory makes friends everywhere she goes, but often forgets sea creatures as soon as she meets them due to her memory loss – her memory is about three seconds long.
Poor Dory!
-
7. colour in your artwork
Hey, time for some colour?
This is an easy part.
Dory’s main body is light blue.
Her pattern on the side is dark blue, as are the spots on her snout.
And yellow for her fins.
